Art installation taking inspiration from a literal take on the phrase ‘big data’ (2017)

How can we understand the vastness of outer space on a human scale? This installation featured a series of 3D printed ceramic sculptures based on exoplanets on NASA’s Kepler Planet Candidate List whose existence was unconfirmed.

Playing with the concept of space and the complexity and quantity of astronomical data, the entire Milky Way galaxy has been condensed into a space that would fit between Svalbard and Brazil, and our heliosphere reduced to an approximate 5cm in length, at a scale of 960,000,000 : 1.

Each of these Kepler Planet Candidates was plotted onto a map of the UK and the sculptures made with soil from each location, alongside a pair of books documenting the research and making process.
