Data sonification installation (2016)
This project is based around the idea of taking “space sound” (radio waves recorded from various planets and celestial bodies, primarily from NASA’s Voyager and Cassini missions) and translating it into something quintessentially terrestrial – a musical box.
Each space recording has been translated into the nearest conventional musical notes and octaves based on the frequency of the radio waves, these translations were then adapted to fit the two octave scale of the musical boxes.
The accompanying book contains both the simplified frequency spectrogram and the final musical box punch card pattern. These patterns have been cut into each page much like the punch cards themselves.
